11.02.07 Heading down the home stretch in college football

November means it is time for college football to wrap up and the transition into basketball begins. There are some regular season college basketball games this weekend as Bethel, Taylor, Indiana Tech, IU South Bend, Indiana Weslayan, St. Francis and Ancilla are all in tournaments this weekend, and Vincennes has a Saturday game at home. Exhibition games will continue this weekend, and more regular season games will be on tap next week.
However, the big story this weekend is college football ( in addition to the Colts-Patriots game). Three weeks are left in Division I play, two weeks left in small college football, and one school wraps up th season Saturday. Ball State and IU meet in Bloomington with 5-4 records. To say this a crucial game for both is a rather large understatement. Purdue travels to Penn State with hope of winning their eighth game and possibly putting themselves in position to win 10 on the year. Notre Dame is back in action after the bye, at home against Navy.
Wabash is still undefeated, they are at home against Denison. Franklin is still leading the HCAC and is at home against Defiance. St. Francis has a tough one with ranked Malone on the road, and Marian looks to win its second in a row after their first-ever win over Taylor last week.
On another note, tomorrow marks the final game of an illustrious coaching career in our state. DePauw soccer coach Page Cotton coaches his final game tomorrow in Greencastle, and ends his 39 year run as a coach. Page is also the Athletic Director, and at various times has coached basketball and tennis in addition to his administrative duties. Page Cotton is the epitome of what coaching is supposed to be about. He is the consumate gentleman, educator and mentor. Coaching needs more people like Page, and there will be a void. However, for 39 years he has touched the lives of many and he will continue to do so. Good luck Page, and thanks for all that you have done.
