02.27.08 Sectional Week Is Underway!

Even though quite a few sectionals had to postpone their Tuesday games to Wednesday, there was still plenty of good basketball played in the southern two-thirds of the state Tuesday night, and there will be plenty more this evening.
Three Tuesday games went overtime. One of them went double-OT, as 3A #10 Charlestown got a 63-59 win over #14 Salem in the 3A North Harrison sectional. Jeffersonville squeaked by Floyd Central 58-57 at the Class 4A Seymour sectional, and Beech Grove got a homecourt 70-62 overtime win over Roncalli in Class 3A.
There were a few upsets, none bigger than East Central’s 33-30 win over Class 4A #3 Bloomington South at the Columbus North sectional.
One other Top 10 team lost in Class 4A Tuesday, as #7 Terre South lost to #11 Plainfield 78-58 in the Martinsville sectional.
Among the intriguing matchups on Wednesday night…
Class 2A #4 Winchester (17-3) takes on Frankton (15-6) at the Alexandria sectional. The Golden Eagles were last year’s state runner-up but don’t have an easy draw for their first-round sectional contest this year.
Class 1A #6 South Newton (18-2) travels to Tri-County to take on the host Cavaliers (13-7). The Rebels won by just six on their home court when the two teams played two weeks ago, and now Tri-County gets the chance to be the home team.
In Class 3A, Knox (15-5) faces Calumet (16-5) at Kankakee Valley. The teams appear to be evenly matched, but it’s hard to tell for sure as the teams have no common opponents this season, nor have they played head-to-head anytime in the last 15 years.
Frankfort (13-8) hosts West Lafayette (13-8) in Class 2A. The Hot Dogs won both regular-season matchups between the schools, but as the cliche goes, it’s tough to beat a team three times in one year.
Four teams in the Class 2A Tipton sectional have at least 14 wins, and two of them go head-to-head tonight as Guerin Catholic (16-5) takes on Madison-Grant (14-6). This will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.
Also in Class 2A, Centerville (12-8) takes on Eastern Hancock (12-8) at Hagerstown. Not only do the teams have similar records, but they had to go to triple overtime to determine a winner when they met in the season-opening game in November. The Royals beat the Bulldogs that night 67-61.

It should be another fun night of basketball. And as a bonus because of Tuesday’s weather, there are going to be several Thursday night games too! What a week for Indiana High School basketball – and thanks for spending part of it here at IndianaSportsTalk.com.
