02.28.08 Wednesday Sectional Recap

There was plenty of exciting basketball around the state as the opening round of IHSAA boys basketball sectional play continued Wednesday night.
After three overtime games Tuesday, there were three more on Wednesday. And two of them were at the same site. At the 4A Michigan City sectional, Valparaiso edged LaPorte 46-45 and Hobart outdistanced Portage 74-60. At Brownstown Central in Class 2A, Clarksville defeated West Washington 55-52.
As with all rounds of the tournament, there were more upsets Wednesday night. Among those, two ranked teams saw their seasons come to an early end. 4A #10 Ft. Wayne South lost a rivalry contest to Ft. Wayne North at the Marion sectional, 61-56. In Class 1A, #6 South Newton lost to Tri-County on the Cavaliers’ home court, 62-47.
The weather which forced postponement of several northern sectionals on Tuesday night has created scheduling issues for several of these tournaments. The result is quite a few Thursday night games – a rarity in state tournament play – and a couple of Monday night championship games.
The Class 1A sectional at Triton was postponed for a second straight night Wednesday. Because the opening round has yet to start in this particular sectional, the teams have agreed to push the championship game back to Monday, March 3. They’ll try again to get things started tonight with the games that should’ve been played on Tuesday.
The championship game of the 4A Michigan City sectional will also be played on Monday. As one of the few 8-team sectionals, having to reschedule Tuesday’s contests to Wednesday forced the entire tournament to be pushed back a night. Semifinals are now set for Saturday night with the championship to be held Monday.
