As for the boys sectional championships, there are 55 of them scheduled tonight. The other nine will be played on Monday. That’s because of both the weather and the girls state finals. More about that in a minute.
Four Top 10 teams were knocked out of the tournament on Friday night, including a number one. In Class 1A, #1 North Daviess lost to #8 Barr-Reeve 59-49.
In Class 4A, #4 Cathedral was defeated by #12 Lawrence North 52-48. In Class 3A, #7 Ft. Wayne Dwenger lost to #6 Harding 71-68 in overtime. In Class 2A, #7 Hauser lost to Southwestern (Hanover) 65-58.
How about Plymouth and Beech Grove? Both 3A teams have gone overtime for both of their wins this week to advance to a sectional championship.
Speaking over overtimes, after 3 OT games on Tuesday, 3 Wednesday, and 1 Thursday, there were 9 overtime contests on Friday night.
Saturday night, a number of teams with sub-.500 records will look for an improbable sectional title. In Class 4A, Elkhart Central (6-17) will host Warsaw, East Noble (9-12) faces Ft. Wayne Snider at DeKalb, and Terre Haute North (10-12) takes on Northview at Martinsville.
In Class 3A, Ft. Wayne Elmhurst (6-14) faces Peru (11-11) on the Tigers’ home court, Heritage (9-12) travels to Harding to take on the Hawks, Madison (10-11) battles Batesville at Greensburg, and Vincennes Lincoln (7-14) is at the Hatchet House against Washington.
In Class 2A, semifinal action is happening at Garrett, and all four teams are under .500. At Fountain Central, Carroll (Flora) is 9-12 and in the championship against Seeger. Wabash (6-16) faces Northfield at Lewis Cass and North Knox (7-16) is hosting rival South Knox.
In Class 1A, North White (4-17) takes on host Tri-County, Tri-Central (4-17) hosts Lafayette Central Catholic, Union (Modoc) (8-14) faces Monroe Central at Blue River Valley, Riverton Parke (8-14) battles Rockville at North Vermillion, Morton Memorial (10-11) takes on Waldron at Edinburgh, Springs Valley (6-16) hosts Orleans, Loogootee (4-17) hosts Barr-Reeve, and New Harmony (4-18) faces Tecumseh at Wood Memorial.
Now, about those 9 sectionals that will have championship action on Monday. Weather has forced semifinal action at Michigan City (4A) and Garrett (2A) to be played tonight. As for the Triton (1A) sectional, the first round was postponed twice to Thursday and semifinals were last night. Rather than have the teams play three nights in a row, Triton and Marquette Catholic will do battle on Monday.
Six more championships are being delayed because one of the schools has a team playing in today’s girls state championships. South Bend Washington, Carmel, Plymouth, Heritage Christian, Ft. Wayne Canterbury and University will each focus on the girls Saturday, then take part in their respective boys sectional finals Monday night.
It’s an exciting day for high school basketball in Indiana, and tonight from 9:30 to midnight Indiana Sports Talk is your place to hear all the scores, and the discussions with coaches and broadcasters who were at the big games.
